"A One Time Thing" was an adventure in doing something I love with people I love. I wanted to create an opportunity to work with my wife again, Jane Sibbett. We met on "Herman's Head" and every day was a blast - working and laughing together and we'd been wanting to make that happen again. It wasn't until a friend showed me what was possible with digital video equipment that I realized the playing field has been completely leveled making it possible to shoot a movie if you want to. So Jane and I decided to make the leap into independent film. I started with "A One Time Thing" because I loved the story. I admire people who want to step up to the plate and do the right thing the way the Dillon character does. It seems simple enough but it isn't always. How many times do you get to the end of your day and say, "I wish I had done that better." Other considerations were: would Jane and I love to see "A One Time Thing" on a date night? Could we shoot it independently? (Our answer was a resounding "yes" to both questions and since we were in charge, we gave it a green light.) I also felt Casey Hill was a character Jane could knock out of the park and man, did she. I think her performance is wonderful. I'm very proud of the entire cast.

One of the joys of independent film is being able to offer every role to your first choice. Remarkably, everyone I wanted said "yes," even when I asked them to defer salaries. And we have some big hitters: Jane Sibbett ("Friends", "It takes Two"), David Newsom ("The Days," "24"), Beth Grant ("Donny Darko,"  "The Rookie," "Six Feet Under"), Patrick Cassidy ("42nd Street," "Smallville"), Anne Ramsay ("Mad About You"), Mark Moses ("Desperate Housewives"). Happily, they were all on board because they loved the script. Like any independent, we had extremely limited budget, so we all wore a lot of hats. I had a wonderful D.P. (Pete Smith) his assistant, and a very talented make-up artist (Misa Aikawa).  That was it. I was the sound guy, props, production coordinator, set construction, camera loader, transpo, and craft services in addition to being writer, producer, director and editor. It was a barn raising, and it was great. In fact it was so great I'm thinking I might give a greenlight to our next project, "Ruby Dice." (Maybe I'll give myself a raise too.) After all my years in the network/studio system, I love the creative freedom of independent film. It's pretty intoxicating.
